FOND DU LAC, Wis. – First period goals by
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and
Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) were all the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team needed on Saturday evening to hold off Marian University, as the Pointers skated to a 2-1 nonconference victory over the Sabres.
Box ScoreGibson netted his third goal of the season at the 12:05 mark of the opening period off assists from
Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) and
Evan Dixon (Novi, MI), putting the Pointers in front, 1-0.
Brooks scored his third goal of the season just over three minutes later off an assist from
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) to give the visiting Pointers a 2-0 advantage after one.
Mariah scored their lone goal of the game midway through the second when Brodie Jamieson lit the lamp to cut the Pointers lead in half, 2-1.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) and the Pointers defense held fast the rest of the way, as he tallied nine of his 22 saves on the evening in a scoreless third period.
Marian goalie Mike Gudmandson tallied 26 saves on the evening.
UW-Stevens Point (9-2-0, 2-0-0 WIAC) will break for finals and the holidays and return to action with a showdown against former conference rival and No. 1-ranked St. Norbert on Jan. 3 in Ashwaubenon, Wis. at Cornerstone Community Ice Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
