APPLETON, Wis. – For the second game in a row,
Jordan Lutz (Amherst, WI/Amherst) set a career high in scoring, as the senior scored 15 points and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds to lead the No. 21-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 60-49 non-conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Alexander Gymnasium.
Box ScoreLutz shot 4-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and made all four of his free throws for UW-Stevens Point (7-2). The Pointers held Lawrence (4-3) to 32.5 percent shooting in the game to defeat the Vikings for the sixth year in a row.
The Pointers led 38-35 with 9:53 remaining before holding the Vikings to just 14 points in the final 10 minutes of play. After Lawrence got within behind back-to-back three-pointers by Jamie Nikitas and Connor Weas, UW-Stevens Point got layups from
Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) and
Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) and a three from
Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne) to re-establish a nine-point lead.
The closest Lawrence got the rest of the way was seven points and UWSP led by as many as 13 on two occasions. After shooting 33.3 percent in the opening half, the Pointers shot at a 56.5 percent clip in the final 20 minutes. Pelkofer had 11 of his 14 points after halftime.
UW-Stevens Point never trailed in the game and took a 26-19 lead into the break after a low-scoring first half of play. Lutz and Ryf combined to score 18 of UWSP's 26 points in the first half and Lawrence made just seven field goals before the break.
Alex Richard (Spring Green, WI/River Valley) and Ryf joined Lutz and Pelkofer in double figures for UWSP. Richard had 14 points, including back-to-back layups in the final five minutes, and match Lutz with seven rebounds. Ryf had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a game-high 37 minutes.
Nikitas, who entered the game averaging 19.7 points per game, led Lawrence with 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals in the contest. Nikitas was 4-for-10 from the field but the rest of the Vikings were just 9-for-30 in the game.
The Pointers improved to 4-0 on the season when outrebounding their opponent after holding a 34-24 advantage on the glass.
UW-Stevens Point takes on No. 8 St. Thomas on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in St. Paul. The game will mark the first time UWSP has played a ranked opponent this season.
