Men's basketball edges Edgewood in overtime

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Alex Richard (Spring Green, WI/River Valley) scored five of his career-high 25 points in overtime as the 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team outscored visiting Edgewood 11-2 in the extra session of a 69-60 overtime victory on Tuesday evening at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.

Edgewood (1-3) overcame a seven-point deficit in the final minute of regulation but UW-Stevens Point (3-1) held the Eagles, who were in ovetime for the third time in four games this season, to 1-for-7 shooting in overtime. Richard scored all five of his points in the extra period in a span of 56 seconds and UWSP shot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in overtime.

The Pointers led 56-49 with 59 seconds remaining before the Eagles forced overtime by making three of their seven three-pointers in the final 34 seconds of regulation. After a Tal Diekvoss three cut it to a four-point game with 34 seconds left, UWSP missed a pair of free throws and Jake Heuer made it a 56-55 game. Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) nailed two free throws with six seconds left but Dylan Rusch drained a three just before the buzzer.

With Edgewood trailing 37-32 with 16:04 remaining in regulation, UW-Stevens Point started to pull away, establishing a 10-point lead at 42-32 with a quick 5-0 spurt. A dunk by Pelkofer and a three-point play by Richard accounted for all the scoring in the run.

Down 44-34, the Eagles quickly cut the deficit to three with a 7-0 run of their own. Matt Savatski capped the run with a three-point play off his own steal. Edgewood had two opportunities to take the lead when trailing by one but was unable to do so. The Pointers led for 42:14, compared to 29 seconds for the Eagles and the game was tied for 1:48.

In the first half, Edgewood led early 6-5 before UW-Stevens Point went on an extended 23-7 run over a span of nearly nine minute to take its biggest lead of the game at 28-13 with 7:26 to go until halftime. The Eagles closed the half on a 15-2 run to get within two at 30-28.

Richard shot 9-for-12 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the game and added seven rebounds to his 25 points. Jordan Lutz (Amherst, WI/Amherst) scored eight of his 13 points in a span of 1:26 in the opening half. Pelkofer and Ritchay each chipped in with 10 points.

Diekvoss led a balanced Edgewood scoring attack with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Nine Eagles' players scored in the game and the visitors enjoyed a 22-5 advantage in bench points.

UW-Stevens Point shot 40.0 percent from the field in the game, compared to 43.6 percent for Edgewood. The Pointers overcame the shooting disparity with a 20-5 advantage in scoring from the free-throw line.

UWSP returns to action at home against North Central on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
