Pointers football drops road conference game at UW-Stout, 31-14

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Theo Maglio (Wautoma, WI/Wautoma) hauled in 131 receiving yards on seven catches and Adam Vesterfelt (Janesville, WI/Parker) rushed for 131 yards, but the UW-Stevens Point football team lost to UW-Stout Saturday, 31-14.

BOX SCORE

Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, UWSP (1-4, 0-2 WIAC) blocked a Blue Devils' punt attempt and Joe Dax (Ashwuabenon, WI/Ashwuabenon) recovered the loose ball at the UWS 34-yard line.

It took the Pointers just three plays and 19 seconds to reach the end zone and claim a 7-3 lead as quarterback Robert Cieplewski (Milwaukee, WI/Hamilton) rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

UWS (3-2, 1-1 WIAC) went back on top 10-7 late in the first half when Joe Peterson caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Michael Blizel.

Blizel opened the second-half scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, giving the Blue Devils a 17-7 lead.

However, the Pointers cut the deficit to 17-14 on their ensuing possession when Vesterfelt sprinted for a 41-yard touchdown.

Yet that was as close as UWSP would get as UWS scored the game's final two touchdowns on a pair of rushing scores from Blizel.

Cieplewski completed 18 of 29 passes for 219 yards and two interceptions.

Bo Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) led the Pointer defense with nine tackles (four solo, five assisted), and Colton Zimmerman (Iola, WI/Iola-Scandinavia) came away with an interception.

The Pointers return to acton next week Saturday, Oct. 13 with another road contest, this time at UW-River Falls. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
