Berlin won a 5-3 decision in Wednesday’s dual at UW-Whitewater. He then picked up three more victories at the CUW Open on Saturday in the 133 bracket. He won by major decision, 12-4, in his first match of the day. He followed that up with a 9-2 decision victory before falling to reigning NCAA Champion Brock Rathbun of Wartburg. He earned another decision win, 5-3, in the consolation bracket. Berlin is now 11-3 on the year.
Other Nominees:
Drew Fredrickson: Fredrickson averaged 11.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in two games during the opening week of the 2018-19 season to help the Pointers to a 2-0 start. In the season-opening win over St. Olaf on Tuesday, Fredrickson had five points, a team-high six assists, five rebounds and a steal. On Saturday, Fredrickson scored 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line. He added two assists, three rebounds and had a steal.
Brooke Geier: Geier piloted the UWSP women’s basketball team to a 2-0 start with wins over Dubuque and Luther at last weekend’s UWSP Tip-Off Classic. She scored 13 points and tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds in the season-opening victory over Dubuque. She went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and dished out three assists. On Saturday, Geier scored a team-high 15 points, while also leading UWSP with five assists and three steals. Her play landed Geier on the five-player all-tournament team.
Jess Posch: Posch won the one-meter diving event with a score of 209.10 to help UWSP defeat UWW in dual action on Saturday. She was also UWSP’s top scorer in the three-meter event with a score of 171.60.
Maxwell Schauer: Schauer won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events in UWSP’s dual win over UW-Whitewater on Saturday. He scored a 141.30 in the one-meter win and 146.55 to win the three-meter dive.
Alec Jeffers: Jeffers won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke in Saturday’s dual win at UW-Whitewater. He clocked a time of 55.94 in the 100 back to win by just over a second. In the 200 back, his time of 1:55.97 was more than a second and a half faster than the field. Jeffers also paced the 400-yard medley relay to victory with time 3:34.15, nearly three seconds faster than the runner-up.
Mackenzie Kratch:Kratch recorded her first two goals of the season to push the Pointers past the Yellow Jackets, 5-4, on Friday. She scored both goals in the third period, within 36 seconds of each other. On Saturday, she recorded five shots on goal in the contest as the Pointers tied the Yellow Jackets, 3-3, in overtime.
Connor Ryckman: Ryckman had two strong performances to help the No. 1-ranked Pointers remain unbeaten and improve to 6-0-2. On Friday, Ryckman recorded a career-high 27 saves in a 5-2 win over No. 11/7 Marian (Wis.). On Satruday, Ryckman held the No. 3/4 St. Norbert Green Knights to one goal in the 1-1 tie. He stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced. For the season, Ryckman is 6-0-1, has a goals-against average of 1.70 and a save percentage of .927.
