Pointer Weekly Update 11-2-09

Football
A few early dropped passes and several penalties in key situations proved to be too much for the UW-Stevens Point (5-3, 4-1) football team to overcome against the second-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks (8-0, 5-0) as they lose 41-12.

The Pointers were led on offense by Beckwith, who finished with 256 yards and two touchdowns on 18-33 passing. Jenkins hauled in six catches for 146 yards and one touchdown.

The Pointers were led on defense by John Jones (Oregon) 15 tackles, six of which were solo. Mike Krueger (Wauwatosa) added 10 tackles and two broken up passes. Reigning WIAC Defensive Player of the Week Matt Lunder (Waunakee) added a sack for the Pointer defense and finished with 10 tackles from his defensive end position.

Whitewater story

The Pointers return to action next week Saturday, Nov. 7, when they host UW-River Falls in a WIAC battle. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Community Stadium at Goerke Field for Parents/Senior Day.

Volleyball
The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team tallied two victories on Wednesday evening, defeating Milwaukee School of Engineering and Edgewood College by identical scores of 3-0. The two non-conference victories improve the Pointers to 13-19 overall heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

MSOE and Edgewood story

The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team dropped the final two matches of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Northwester College of Minnesota 3-1 and the College of St. Scholastica 3-0.

NCM and CSS story

The Pointers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 3 when the travel to Platteville to face the Pioneers in the quarterfinal round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament. Action is scheduled for 7 p.m.


Cross Country
The UW-Stevens Point men’s cross country team tied for second with 64 points at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships this Saturday in Whitewater. The defending champion Pointers had their top-5 runner place in the top 26.

Men’s story

The UW-Stevens Point women’s cross country team finished fourth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Saturday in Whitewater. The Pointers had three runners place in the top-25 on the day.

Women’s story

Both the men’s and women’s teams return to action on Saturday, November 14th when they run in NCAA Midwest Regional in Oshkosh.


Men’s Hockey
The UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team lost its home opener to the University of St. Scholastica 4-2 on Friday evening after an hour and a half delay due to a power outage at K.B. Willett Arena. Action, originally scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., began at 9:04 p.m.

Game one story

The UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey dropped to 0-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and 1-2 dropping the second game of a two game series to the Saints of St. Scholastica on Saturday at K.B. Willett Arena.

Game two story

The Pointers return to action November 6-7 when they host Hamline and Bethel in non-conference action at K.B. Willett Arena. Game time for both nights is 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Hockey
The UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team took a 1-1 tie into the third period but were unable to hold on, falling to the Tommies of St. Thomas 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Game one story

The UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team (1-1-0, 1-1-0) won its first game of the season, defeating the University of St. Thomas Tommies (1-1-0, 1-1-0) 5-3 in St. Paul, Minn., splitting the weekend series with the Tommies. Five different Pointers scored on the day.

Game two story

The Pointers return to action Friday, Nov. 6 when they travel to Augsburg College for a non-conference game. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.

Swimming and Diving
ST. CLOUD, MN-The UW-Stevens Point men’s and women’s swimming diving teams competed at a tri meet against UW-Eau Claire and St. Cloud University over the weekend. The men defeated Division II St. Cloud 182-114 and the Blugold 215-85 to claim top honors. The women lost to St. Cloud 219-80, but defeated the Blugold 162.5-136.5.

Recap

The Pointers return action on November 13 and 14, Friday and Saturday for the Border Battle against the University of South Dakota, Minnesota State Mankato, and UW-Milwaukee with the action beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.


Women's Soccer
After having last week off, the Pointer women's soccer team returns to action this week Thursday in the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament, hosting the lowest remaining seed in the tournament in action scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Point Soccer Bowl.


Women's Basketball
The Pointer women's basketball team takes to the court this week as they face the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee in an exhibition game Klotsche Center. The Pointers head to Milwaukee on Thursday, Nov. 5 to take on the Panthers at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Panther Ticket Office inside the Klotsche Center. Prices are $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children. For more information call 414-229-5886.
