MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN - The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team took a 1-1 tie into the third period but were unable to hold on, falling to the Tommies of St. Thomas 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.
Down 1-0 early in the second period, the Pointers tied the game at 1-1 thanks to a
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C.) goal off a
Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN) pass, scoring the first goal of the season for the Stevens Point.
In the third period, the Tommies Taylor Schluter gave St. Thomas the lead at the 14:25 mark, scoring the even-handed goal. St. Thomas added another goal just over a minute later, putting the Tommies in front for good, as they went on to the 3-1 victory.
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI) finished with 21 saves on the day, including 12 in the second period, in suffering the loss.
UW-Stevens Point and St. Thomas close out their weekend series on Saturday in St. Paul. Game time Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
