Swimming and Diving Opens Season at St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD, MN-The UW-Stevens Point men’s and women’s swimming diving teams competed at a tri meet against UW-Eau Claire and St. Cloud University over the weekend. The men defeated Division II St. Cloud 182-114 and the Blugolds 215-85 to claim top honors. The women lost to St. Cloud 219-80, but defeated the Blugolds 162.5-136.5.

The men’s 400 yard medley relay team of Chris Hruska (Verona), Brent Schwartz (Waukesha), Matthew Olp (Oregon), and Sam Davy (Stevens Point) claimed the top finish with a time of 3:35.95.

Davy finished with 48.46 in the 100 yard freestyle to claim top honors and also finished second overall in the men’s 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.28.

In the men’s 100 yard backstroke, the Pointer’s claimed four out of the top ten spots with Eric Emerson (River Falls) claiming top honors with a time of 55.51. Hruska was fourth finishing with a time of 56.26, Ian Girdley (Verona) was sixth with a time of 57.70 and Casey Murnane (Redwing, MN) was seventh with a time of 59.00.

In the men’s 50 yard freestyle UW-Stevens Point took home the top three spots led by Olp finishing with a time of 21.59. Ryan Golz (Inver Grove Heights, MN) and Emerson were second and third with times of 22.20 and 22.55.

Also notching victories on the day was Brent Schwartz (Waukesha) tallied victories in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events, posting times of 1:00.42 in the 100 and a time of 2:13.45 in the in the 200.  Jeff Peterson (Verona), Shaun Marcott (Madison) and Samuel Betterley (Castle Rock, MN) finished 2-4 in the 200 butterfly as well, making it a clean sweep of the points for the Pointers. 

In the women’s 200 yard freestyle the Pointers claimed three out of the top ten spots with Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN) finishing second with a time of 2:00.09. Beth Ann Abraham (Eden Prairie, MN) was fifth with a time of 2:03.13 and Traci Gibb (Cedarburg) was seventh with a time of 2:03.88.

Lukes was also third overall in the women’s 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.60. In that same race Gibb was fifth overall with a time of 5:33.24.

Jennifer Bussey (Ohanhassen, MN) was second coming in with time of 2:29.42 in the women’s 200 yard breaststroke. Also in that race Allie Wilker (Owatonna, MN) was fifth finishing with a time of 2:39.73.

The Pointers return action on November 13 and 14, Friday and Saturday for the Border Battle against the University of South Dakota, Minnesota State Mankato, and UW-Milwaukee with the action beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
