Pointer Weekly Update - 11/16/09
Football
Down 20-13 heading into the final quarter on Saturday afternoon, the UW-Stevens Point football team scored 28 unanswered points, pulling away from the Pioneers of UW-Platteville and cruising to the 41-27 victory in the final conference game of the season.
Platteville Story
The UW-Stevens Point football team fell just short of their second consecutive playoff berth on Sunday afternoon, failing to make the field of 32 for the 2009 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs.
UW-Whitewater was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) team in the 2009 playoff field, receiving the conference's automatic bid to the playoff by virtue of winning the conference title. The Warhawks received the top seed in the West bracket and host Lakeland College on Saturday.
UW-Stevens Point's season comes to an end at 7-3 overall, 6-1 in conference play.
Soccer
Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc) headed a Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids) pass to the back of the net at the 52:55 mark, giving the Pointers the eventual 1-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament, defeating the University of St. Thomas. The 22nd ranked UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team saw their NCAA Division III Tournament run come to an end on Sunday evening, as they fell 1-0 to the No. 5 ranked Vikings of Augustana College.
The Pointers all-time NCAA Tournament record is now 14-14-1 all-time. UW-Stevens Point graduates just one senior, Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids), from a team that posted it's 11th undefeated season in WIAC play this season.

Cross Country
Nick Schaefer (New London) finished 23rd to lead a field of Pointer runners at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday afternoon, as the Pointers ran their way to a sixth place finish in a field of 39 teams, all competing for a spot at the NCAA National Championships Nov. 21 in Beachwood, Ohio.
Men's Story
The UW-Stevens Point women's cross country team ran to a 10th place finish Saturday afternoon at the Division III Midwest Regional, placing five runners in the top-70 in the field of 273 runners.

Senior Nick Schaefer (New London) will be UW-Stevens Point's representative at the 2009 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Highland Hills Golf Course in Highland Hills, Ohio. Baldwin-Wallace College is slated to host the event.

Men's Hockey
The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team held a 3-2 advantage in the second period against the No. 1 ranked Green Knights of St. Norbert College on Friday evening, but two late second period goals and five third period goals overwhelmed the Pointers, as St. Norbert skated to the 9-3 victory.

After a scoreless first period, the Green Knights scored two second period goals and held the advantage as St. Norbert improved to 6-0-1 overall, 4-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action with a 2-0 victory over the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team.
The Pointers return to action on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21, when they travel to Menomonie for a weekend series with the Blue Devils of UW-Stout. Friday's action is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Saturday St. Norbert
Swimming
The UW-Stevens Point swimming & diving teams battled their way to second place finishes over the weekend, as UW-Milwaukee took home the men's and women's title at the annual Border Brawl swim meet.
The University of South Dakota finished third in both the men's and women's rankings while Minnesota State finished fourth.

The Pointers return to action on December 4-5 when they travel to the Wheaton (Ill.). Action Friday is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
Women's Hockey
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN) scored with 11:53 to go in the third to break a 2-2 tie as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team skated to a 3-2 non-conference victory over the Oles of St. Olaf College on Friday evenings at Ice Hawks Arena.
Game One Story
St. Olaf scored 2:18 into the overtime period to give the Oles the 4-3 victory over the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Ice Hawks arena in non-conference action.
Game Two Story
The Pointers (5-2) open Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play next Friday, Nov. 20, when they host Concordia (Wis.) in a weekend series. Friday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
Wrestling
The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team started off the 2009-10 season with a bang, beating Lakeland College by a score of 40-3 in Berg Gymnasium. After losing the first match, the Pointers went on a roll by winning the next nine.

Junior Ben Engelland (Neenah) took home the 2009 Pointer Open Most Outstanding Wrestler award after winning the 184 pound division championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating UW-Madison's Derrick Borlie in the final match 2-1 at the 2009 Pointer Open presented by Adventure 212.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Concordia (Wis.) Open in Mequon. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Men's Basketball
Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay) scored a game-high 19 points in his Pointer debut as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team jumped out to an early 21-6 lead and never looked back, defeating the Johnnies of St. John's 81-57.
St. John's Story
The tenth-ranked Pointers return to action on Friday, Nov. 20 when they travel to Tacoma, Wash. where they will take on Whitworth College in the opening round of the Puget Sound Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. central time.
Women's Basketball
The Pointers open up their season on the road when they travel to La Crosse to take on Viterbo University on Tuesday, November 17 with action set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
