Nick Schaefer (New London) finished 23rd to lead a field of Pointer runners at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday afternoon, as the Pointers ran their way to a sixth place finish in a field of 39 teams, all competing for a spot at the NCAA National Championships Nov. 21 in Beachwood, Ohio.
The top two teams and top seven individuals who are not a member of those top two teams will automatically qualify for next Saturday's (Nov. 21) NCAA Division III Championship in Beachwood, Ohio. Additional team and individual selections to the NCAA Division III Championship from the Midwest Regional will be announced Sunday (Nov. 15).
North Central (Ill.) finished as the top team at the event, placing five of their runners in the top-10. UW-La Crosse finished second, posting a team score of 105.
For the Pointers, Schaefer finished with a time of 25:04 to pace the Pointers while
Joel Heroux (Sturgeon Bay) finished 29th with a time of 25:11 and
Brandon Dworak (Denmark) finished 32nd with a time of 25:18.
Rounding out the field for UWSP,
Mark Mitchell (Franklin) finished 42nd overall with a time of 25:31,
Sean Hasenstein (Sheboygan) finished 47th with a time of 25:38.
Stevens Point, who received an at-large bid to last year's championship on their way to a fourth place finish, will await news Sunday of another at-large berth to Nationals.
