STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-6, 1-1) overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat UW-Stout (7-6, 0-2) on Saturday, 73-63.
Senior
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) recorded a double-double with a career-high 18 rebounds. She scored 17 points with three blocks. Fellow senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) scored a career-high 22 points. She grabbed five boards and had two assists.
Freshman
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) led the comeback with 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half. She added six steals, four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) began the game with a three-pointer in the opening minute of play. A Barrett tip-in gave UWSP a 5-0 lead, but back-to-back threes gave the Blue Devils the lead. Later in the quarter, a 10-0 run put the visitors up 26-13 with just over a minute remaining in the first.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits early in the second quarter. The Blue Devils hit three threes in the quarter to take a 45-31 lead into the half.
Barrett scored UWSP's first three points of the second half, but UW-Stout extended the lead to 16 with 5:47 to go in the third. Geier and
Olivia Pawlak (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) scored the Pointers' next seven points as the comeback began. Five of six free throws down the stretch cut the deficit to six heading to the fourth.
Barrett again scored UWSP first points of the quarter, but the Blue Devils held the lead early. Then with 6:10 remaining momentum swung fully in the Pointers' favor as Geier drained a three-pointer to pull UWSP within one. She quickly put the Pointers ahead with a layup on the next possession. After a Blue Devils' bucket, Geier and Barrett gave UWSP a three-point edge with two minutes left. UWSP hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Pointers hit the road to face the UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Jan. 10) and are at UW-Eau Claire next Saturday (Jan. 13).
