LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-7, 1-2) saw the host UW-La Crosse Eagles (9-5, 2-1) scored five-straight points to open the second half and the Pointers were not able to keep pace in a 51-36 loss on Wednesday.
Senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) led the Pointers with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half. She went 5-of-6 from the field with six rebounds and a block.
Freshmen
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) also grabbed six rebounds each. Senior
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) added five boards to her league-leading total.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) got UWSP on the board three and a half minutes into the game to tie the score at 2-2. A 5-1 run by the Eagles led to an 8-7 edge in a low scoring first quarter.
Barrett scored on back-to-back possessions to open the second quarter and give UWSP a one-point edge. She accounted for UWSP's first 11 points of the quarter on 3-of-3 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. The Eagles scored in the final minute to send the game to half, tied 20-20.
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) ended a 5-0 run by UWL to open the second half.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London),
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and Barrett each scored in the quarter, but the Eagles held a 36-30 lead through three.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London), Schmidt and Geier each recorded a bucket in the fourth quarter to account for all of UWSP's points. The Eagles ended the game on a 9-0 run over the final 4:24.
The Pointers head to Eau Claire on Saturday to face the Blugolds. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
