EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (20-6) picked up a pair of victories at the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament on Friday reaching the 20-win plateau. UWSP swept Martin Luther College (12-11) in the first match of the day and rallied for a five-set win over Augsburg (14-5) in the nightcap.
Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) had a career-high 25 kills in the win over Augsburg and earned her eighth double-double in 10 matches by adding 14 digs. She also led the Pointers with 16 kills in the opening match against MLC.
Senior
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) led UWSP with 17 and 36 digs in the wins over the Knights and Auggies, respectively. She had five aces on the day, including four against MLC.
Freshman
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) racked up 85 assists over the two matches. She picked up career-highs with 49 assists and 24 digs versus the Auggies.
UWSP 3, MLC 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-17)
The Pointers came out swinging in the first set. UWSP hit .278 and committed just two errors while holding the Knights to a -.045.
UWSP's hitting percentage went up in the second set. After 17 kills in the set, the Pointers ended with a .371 hitting percentage and a 2-0 lead.
The sweep was completed with 10 kills in the third set and held MLC to just .091 hitting. The Pointers had five service aces in the win.
UWSP 3, AC 2 (25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11)
The momentum carried into the first set for UWSP. The Pointers hit .178 with 12 kills in an opening set win.
Attacking errors creeped in as UWSP totaled 18 miscues over the second and third sets, both going to Augsburg.
The Pointers rebounded in the fourth set with a match-high .279 hitting percentage. UWSP swung for 17 kills, the most in a set by either team all match.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Pointers and Auggies hit an identical -.036, but the Pointers prevailed for the comeback win.
UWSP returns to Berg Gym on Wednesday to face UW-Oshkosh at 7:00 p.m. in conference action. Wednesday's tilt is deemed a "Black Out" as all fans are asked to wear black to the match.
