STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team used a 3-1 victory over UW-Platteville on Friday evening to advance to the championship game of the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament.
The Pointers, who have never played in a conference tournament championship match, will take on UW-Whitewater, which needed five sets to defeat UW-Eau Claire 3-2 in the semifinal opener from Berg Gym.
The Pointers came out strong in the tournament's opening sets, defeating Platteville by scores of 25-18 and 25-21.
The visiting Pioneers took the third set, but not without a fight from the Pointers, who evened the score at 23-all before Platteville captured the final two points.
In the fourth set it was all UWSP, as
Christina Brinkman (Bristol, WI/Westosha Central) and
Sarah Wildish (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) helped the Pointers reach the championship match.
Brinkman led the way with 15 kills on 36 attempts while
Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger, WI/Slinger) added 10 and Wildish chipped in with nine.
Alexis Hartman (Deer Park, IL/Lake Zurich) finished the day with 40 assists while
Ally Groth (Germantown, WI/Germantown) had a team-high 20 digs.
Briana Kaiser led the Pioneers with 16 kills.
Action kicks off in Berg Gym at Noon with the third-place match between the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire and the Pioneers of UW-Platteville. The Pointers will then take on the Warhawks at 2:30 p.m.
