For the first time since 30 years ago, the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team can call itself champions of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Thanks to a 3-1 victory over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday evening, the Pointers volleyball team secured at least a share of the league's regular-season championship.
The Pointers (25-6, 7-1 WIAC) extended their winning streak to 17 games on the evening as well, thanks to the 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14 victory.
Christina Brinkman (Bristol, WI/Westosha Central) led the way with14 kills on 44 attempts while
Sarah Wildish (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) added 13 and
Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger, WI/Slinger) added 10. Bartkowiak chipped in with 10 blocks, six assisted, and
Ally Groth (Germantown, WI/Germantown) chipped in with a team-high 17 digs.
Only UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater have a chance to clinch shares of the conference championship. Both teams (5-1) have two conference contests remaining. The Blugolds host UW-La Crosse (Oct. 28) and UW-Platteville (Oct. 29), while the Warhawks will travel to UW-River Falls (Oct. 28) and UW-Stout (Oct. 29).
The Pointers will await the final weekend of the regular season to see what their seed will be in the upcoming
2011 WIAC Tournament. Action gets underway with the opening round on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
