STEVENS POINT - Twelve men and five women will compete in the purple and gold this weekend as the UW-Stevens Point men's and women's track and field teams descend on Marietta, Ohio for the 2009 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College.
Action gets underway at 11 a.m. on May 21 and goes through Saturday, May 23.
For the women, five women will compete in five different events for the Pointers including the 100, 200 and 400-meter runs, the 1,500-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay.
The 4x400m relay team of
Elizabeth Caine (Plover),
Kathleen Folbrecht (Jefferson),
Kristin Kuber (Tomahawk) and
Laura Simonis (Rosholt) enter the 2009 Championships with the nation's second-best time in the event, posting a 3:50.51 in May 8th's Dr. Keeler Invite. Wartburg College holds down the nation's top spot in the event, posting a 3:44.29 on April 18.
Caine also qualified in the 100m and 200m dash events. Her time of 12.11 in the 100m dash is good for 10th best in 2009, achieved at the WIAC Championships. Caine's time in the 200m, 24.59, fell just short of the automatic qualifying time, but she still qualified with her performance at the WIAC Championships.
Also qualifying for the 200m dash is
Laura Simonis (Rosholt/Rosholt), who ranks 19th out of a field of 20 qualifiers. Her time of 25.15, also recorded at the WIAC Championships, puts her in a position to compete for a national championship in the event.
Two Pointers also qualified for the 400m dash, as Folbrecht and Simonis both qualified for the championships. Folbrecht's time of 56.62 was good for 10th best in the nation in 2009 and Simonis' 57.09 was good for 17th in the 18 member field.
In the 1,500m run,
