PLATTEVILLE – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday evening, falling 3-1 to the Pioneers of UW-Platteville in the quarterfinal round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament.
Down 13-11 in the first set, the Pointers rattled off five straight points to pull in front 16-13 and stayed in front the rest of the way, rolling to the 25-19 victory.
The loss in game on sparked the Pioneers, who pulled in front 10-6 and never looked back, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 victory. The third set saw much of the same as the Pioneers jumped out to the early lead and cruised to the 25-22 win.
After a back-and-forth battle in the fourth set found the Pointers up 22-19, Platteville rattled off six of the next seven points to close out Stevens Point 25-23.
Three Pointers tallied double-digit kills on the evening.
Michaela Rheineck (St. Paul, MN) led the way with 12 kills in 29 attempts while
Kaitlin Wolfe (Roscoe, IL) added 11 and
Christina Brinkman added 10.
Bonnie Segl (Woodbury, MN) led the way with 24 assists and
Lizzy Taylor (Eau Claire) and
Pam Nora (Forest Lake, Minn.) each added 19 digs in the loss.
Platteville was led by Briana Kaiser and Melissa Hillebrand, who each tallied 13 kills on the evening.
The Pointers end the season with a record of 13-23. The 13 victories exceeds last season’s win total by one. The Pointers also finished with a 3-5 mark in the WIAC, a two win improvement over last season’s mark.
