Pointers’ Quartet Secures All-WIAC Team Honors

MADISON, Wis. – Four members of the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team were named to the All-WIAC teams, the league office announced on Wednesday (March 4).  Senior Ethan Bublitz was a first-team selection while Blake Ehrke, Garrett Nelson and Brandon Spray picked up honorable mention nods.  Matt Koerner was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Bublitz nabs his third league honor of his career after All-WIAC selections in 2019 and 2017.  He led UWSP in scoring at 17.4 points per game, the fourth-best scoring average in the league this season.  Bublitz was the most prolific free-throw shooter on the year with league highs in attempts (156) and makes (130 for the third-best percentage at .833.He was also the conference leader in minutes played per game at just under 36.  In December, Bublitz picked up WIAC Athlete of the week honors.  Bublitz concluded his career with 362 made free throws, third-most in school history, and 1,386 points, 15th in program history.

Blake Ehrke

Ehrke picks up his first conference award.  He was a force on the glass in his senior season hauling in 210 rebounds, second in the conference.  Ehrke led the Pointers in assists with 57.  His 11.9 points per game was second to Bublitz on the team.  This season, Ehrke had six double-doubles, four of which came against WIAC foes, and his 45 steals were second-most in the WIAC.

Nelson also garners his first career league accolade.  He burst onto the scene offensively in 2019-20 boosting his scoring average to 10.9, the fourth double-figure scorer for UWSP.  He dished out 56 assists, one shy of Ehrke for the team lead.  He started the final 15 games of the season and scored in double digits in 12 league games.

Brandon Spray

Spray grabs a league award for the first time in his career.  He was third on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game.  He started 20 of the 21 games played, missing five games with an injury.  He recorded a pair of double-doubles on the year and was fifth in the league with a team-high 21 blocks.  Spray averaged 1.62 steals per game was the fourth-best in the conference.

Koerner pockets an all-sportsmanship honor after a senior season that saw his get a start in all 26 games.  He shot .402 from three-point range with a team-best 39 makes from behind the arc.He opened league play with career highs of 21 points and five made three-pointers.

UWSP reached the first round of the WIAC Tournament and finished with a 15-11 record.  The Pointers were one of three teams in the WIAC that had four players average double figures for the season.  Defensively, UWSP led the league with a conference-low 64.3 points per game allowed.
