Pointers Extend Home Win Streak to Eight on Nelson’s Late Bucket

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) made a running layup in traffic with four seconds remaining as the No. 25 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (15-6, 9-1) extended its home win streak to eight games with a 66-64 win over No. 24 UW-River Falls (14-6, 5-5) on Saturday.

Sophomore Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored a career-high 13 points for UWSP.  He shot 3-for-3 from three-point range and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells), Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) and Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) also scored in double figures with 11 points each.  Delmore and Fredrickson hit three three-pointers each.  O'Heron pulled down five rebounds.

After O'Heron opened the game with an early jumper, Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) hit a three to put UWSP up 5-2.  O'Heron scored six more points and back-to-back threes by Fredrickson and Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) pushed the lead to 11 at 23-12.

Later in the half, Spray hit his first triple of the game with 5:30 remaining to make it a 32-25 lead for UWSP.  The Falcons scores six-straight to close within one before a Fredrickson three, but UWRF reeled off six more to take a 37-35 halftime lead.

Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) began the second half with a steal and a breakaway dunk, but UWRF went on a 7-1 run.  Delmore and Fredrickson hit threes to bring the Pointers within a possession.  Delmore drained another three, but UWSP just couldn't pull even until Spray hit from deep to tie the game at 56-56 with 6:07 remaining.

At the 3:30 mark, Spray drained another three to tie the game again at 59-59.  Delmore nailed a three with just over two minutes to go knotting the game at 62-62.  O'Heron hit both free throws with 1:15 to go before Nelson's game-winning layup broke a 64-64 tie in the closing seconds.  The Pointers thwarted three inbounds attempts by the Falcons over the final seconds to seal the win.

The Pointers head to Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 7) to face the second-place Pioneers with 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Bo Ryan Court.
