STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) made all 10 free throws and tied a career-high with 23 points as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (18-8) knocked off visiting No. 19 UW-Oshkosh (20-7) by a 71-63 score in the WIAC Tournament semifinals (presented by Culver's) on Friday night.
Delmore shot 5-of-8 from the floor, including three three-point makes. He snagged a trio of boards and had two assists.
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) and
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) were both in double figures with 14 and 12, respectively. Dodge went 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
Dodge and Delmore hit back-to-back threes to erase an early 3-0 deficit. Later in the half,
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) nailed a three to push the lead to six at 15-9. Delmore hit another three with 8:24 remaining in the first half, but UWSP couldn't extend the lead.
The Titans put a six-point spurt together to eke ahead 24-23 with just over four minutes left in the half.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) ended the run with a triple and a late bucket by Delmore gave UWSP a 30-28 lead at the half.
Dodge hit consecutive threes to begin the second half, but a 7-0 run gave UWO a 38-36 less than three minutes in. The teams swapped mini-runs and the game was knotted at 49-49 with 9:36 to go.
O'Heron and
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) scored on back-to-back possessions to give UWSP a five point lead. Dodge and Delmore hit threes to grow the advantage to seven followed by an O'Heron basket for a 62-53 lead. The Pointers hit seven of their final eight free throw attempts to ice the win.
