BROWN DEER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team began its quest for an 18th-consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title and sit in first place after day one of the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) on Thursday. UWSP's women's team is in fourth after day one.
Day One Results
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Andrew King (Palatine, Ill./),
Sam Jekel (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West),
Jack Englehardt (Madison, Wis./West) and
Reilly Donnellan (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) set a conference championship record with a winning time of 1:20.76. The Pointers team of
Ethan Bott (Whitefish Bay, Wis./),
Grant Moser (St. Michael, Minn./), Englehardt and Jekel also set a record after a win in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:20.23. It was the seventh-straight year for UWSP winning both relay events.
Englehardt earned an individual title as he won the 50-yard freestyle for the second-consecutive year, improving his winning time to 20.30. It was the second-fastest time in the event in the history of the WIAC Championship (UWSP's Chase Gross, 2009, 20.16). Jekel, Donnellan and King also finished in the top-five in the race.
Sophomore
Nate Somers (Oshkosh, Wis./West) also was a repeat champion in the 500-yard freestyle. His winning time this year was 4:34.76 in the event.
Garrett Richetto (Wausau, Wis./East) and
Michael Mills (Fox Point, Wis./Nicolet) placed second and third, respectively, for UWSP.
Freshman
Jacob Aegerter (Cross Plains, Wis./) and sophomore
Grant Moser (St. Michael, Minn./) earned second- and third-place finishes in the 200-yard IM. Moser edged out the fourth-place finisher by just 0.2 seconds.
For the women,
Erica Perkins (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century High School),
Margaret Hoover (Pleasant Prairie, WI/),
Bree Parent (Mt. Horeb, Wis./) and Kassie Yeazal took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a swim of 1:40.50.
Bridget Flesher (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) joined Parent, Perkins and Yeazal for a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
Junior
Jackie Braun (Sauk Rapids, Minn./) scored a fourth-place finish in the three-meter diving event.
Angie D'Oronzo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew High School) and Katy Daniels-Walker finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Day two of the WIAC Championship begins with the preliminaries on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Friday's finals begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.
