Women’s Soccer Suffers Double Overtime Defeat

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (9-8-2) suffered a heart-breaking defeat in double overtime, 2-1, at UW-Stout (9-5-5) in the first round of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The host Blue Devils got on the board early in the first half.  Kaitlyn Hess scored her team-high seventh of the season in the seventh minute to put UWSP behind.
 
Freshman Kenadie Cain (Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) netted her second career goal in the 42nd minute to level the match at 1-1 heading into half time.  Fellow freshman Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) assisted on the goal.
 
Neither team was able to break the tie in the second half or the first overtime.  Then in the 103rd minute, UW-Stout's Hannah Kirchner scored her first of the year to end the match.
 
Nora Hargett (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) led the Pointers with three shots in the match, two of which were on net.  UWSP was out-shot in the match, 14-9.
 
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) made six saves for the Pointers.  She ends the season with a 0.85 goals against average and five shutouts.
 
UWSP finishes the season with nine wins and 41 goals scored, the most by the Pointers since 2012.  Hamilton topped the team with nine goals and 21 points.  Hargett's six assists were the most on the team.
