UWSP Survives Late to Notch First Conference Win

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Five Pointers scored in double digits as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-4, 1-1) held off a late push from visiting UW-La Crosse (6-7, 0-2) to pick up a conference win, 75-71, on Saturday at Berg Gym.

Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) led all players with 18 points in the game.  Fellow seniors Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) put up 15 and 14 points, respectively, while juniors Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) and Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) added 11 points apiece.

Barrett, Douglas and Hennes scored on consecutive possessions as UWSP opened up a 7-0 lead early.  A minute later, Hennes hit her second-straight three-pointer and Douglas added a bucket to put the Pointers in front 12-3 less than three minutes in.  Later in the quarter, a Roland three ended a 7-3 run by UWL and the Pointers held a five-point lead after the first.

After the Eagles closed within two, Anklam and Hennes converted on back-to-back offensive trip to push the lead back to six.   Barrett scored four point through the middle of the period and a late three by Douglas helped to secure a four-point edge at the half.

Anklam and Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) each hit from behind the arc to give the Pointers a 10-point lead less than two minutes in the third period.  Then with 3:51 left in the quarter, Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) buried a three to push the lead back to 10.  Anklam again hit from deep in the final minute, but the Eagles landed a three of their own to cut the UWSP advantage to six heading to the fourth.

UW-La Crosse opened the final period on an 8-4 run to pull within two of the Pointers.  After an and-one by Douglas, back-to-back three by the Eagles put UWL ahead by one.  With three-and-a-half to go, Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) drilled a three, but a 4-0 run put the Eagles on top by two with 2:27 to go.  Anklam scored five-straight points and Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a free throw as the Pointers' defense held the Eagles scoreless the remainder of the game.

UWSP head to UW-Stout on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup before back-to-back home games.  Next Saturday, the Pointers host UW-River Falls at 3:00 p.m. and UWSP plays UW-Platteville at Berg Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
