WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against No. 2 UW-Whitewater this afternoon (April 10), falling 12-6 and 7-1.
The Pointers (7-11, 1-3 WIAC) pounded out 14 hits in game one, but were unable to come up with enough clutch hits, leaving nine runners on base as opposed to Whitewater's (14-1, 3-1 WIAC) four runners left on base.
Whitewater jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Two Warhawks singled with two outs, but Austin Jones homered, giving the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.
The Pointers chipped away inning by inning and took lead in the top of the sixth inning, 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh, the Warhawks erupted for seven runs on six hits and one Pointer error.
The Pointers managed one run in the top of the ninth, but came up short of the comeback, falling 12-6.
UWSP had five multiple hit players and were led by
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) (3-for-4) and
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) (3-for-5).
In game two, Whitewater's pitching staff only gave up one run in nine innings of work. The trio of pitchers were led by Ankur Shah (2-0) who pitched six innings, scattering six hits and struck out three Pointers.
The lone run came for the UWSP came in the top of the ninth inning after
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, IL/Boylan Catholic) hit in
William Iloncaie (East Troy, WI/East Troy).
The Pointers had eight hits in the game and were led by
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) who went 3-for-4.
UWSP returns to action on Wednesday (April 13) as they host Marian University for their home opener. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
