Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) completed his first-career hat trick in the span of 8:35 in the third period as the No. 6/8 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey rallied from 4-0 down to top St. Olaf 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at K.B. Willett Arena.
Box ScoreSt. Olaf (2-10-3) led 4-0 near the midpoint of the second period and 4-1 after two periods before UW-Stevens Point (10-3-1) rallied for its first comeback from four goals down since at least 2000-01. The win was UWSP's fourth in a row and the Pointers have now scored 22 goals in their last three games.
With UW-Stevens Point trailing 4-0 midway through the second period,
Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) got the Pointers on the board but St. Olaf maintained a 4-1 lead after two. In the third, however, a
Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI) power-play goal cut the deficit to two before Kalisz got his first at 8:50 to make it 4-3.
The game-tying goal came from
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem), who tucked a backhand shot over the left shoulder of St. Olaf goaltender Eric Hancock from a
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) pass at 11:52 of the third. Kalisz scored the final two goals of the game to complete his hat trick, netting the go-ahead goal at 12:57 of the third and an insurance goal with 2:35 remaining.
Kalisz's three points on the afternoon gave him eight for the weekend after the senior had five assists against Hamline on Thursday. He has 12 points in the last three games and 26 points in 14 games this season.
St. Olaf built a 4-0 lead with three goals in the second period after Judd Lowenstein's goal late in the first period put the Oles ahead. The visitors found the back of the net three time in the span of 7:03 in the second period on goals by David Rath, JT Paine and Ole Stetsaas.
UW-Stevens Point went 1-for-7 in the power play in the game but killed off all five St. Olaf chances with the extra skater, including a five-minute major in the second period.
The Pointers outshot the Oles 39-15 in the game, including 11-3 in the first period and 15-2 in the decisive third.
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made five saves in relief to earn the win after entering the game in the second period. Hankock turned aside 33 shots for St. Olaf.
The Pointers will return to action this coming weekend with a trip to Minnesota, taking on Saint Mary's on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and Augsburg on Saturday Jan. 16 at 4:05 p.m.
