Cold-shooting second half sinks Pointers at Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Joann Wolfenberg (Adell, WI/Plymouth Comprehensive) and Jamie Destache (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) each tallied 10 points on Wednesday evening, but the Pointers could not overcome shooting 29 percent in the second half (9-31) as the Pointers fell 64-52 at Kachel Gym in Whitewater.

In the first half, the Pointers were the hot-shooting team, building a ten-point edge, 16-6, with 9:54 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Warhawks slowly chipped away at the Pointers lead and took their first lead of the evening with just 2:04 remaining, pushing in front by one, 28-27. The teams traded blows over the final two minutes with the Pointers taking the one-point advantage, 31-30, into the break.

In the second half, the Warhawks took the lead for good with 16:28 remaining, going in front by as many as 13, 54-41, with 7:28 left.

The Pointers closed the gap to just four, 55-51, with a 10-1 run, but the Warhawks answered with a 9-1 run of their own in the final four minutes to seal the 12-point victory.

Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) each chipped in with eight points for the Pointers in the loss.

UW-Whitewater's Abbie Reeves led all scorers with 15 and Kate McKay added 11.

The Pointers (11-12, 6-8 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at UW-Stout. Game time from Menomonie is scheduled for 3 p.m.
