Women's basketball hosts Muskies, nationally-ranked Tommies

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team returns home from a 1-1 showing at the UChicago/WashU Classic, including a win over No. 9 Washington (Mo.), to face Lakeland and No. 18 St. Thomas this week at Berg Gym.

LAST TIME OUT
UW-Stevens Point split a pair of games at the UChicago/WashU Classic on Friday and Saturday in Chicago, Ill. The Pointers opened the tournament with a 61-57 victory over No. 9 Washington (Mo.) on Friday before falling 63-40 to Chicago on Saturday.

In the opener, Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists to lead the Pointers past the Bears. UW-Stevens Point used a 6-0 run to take a 59-52 lead with 3:57 remaining in regulation before WashU scored the next five to get within two with 45 seconds to go. A layup by Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) with 12 seconds left accounted for the final margin, as the Pointers held the Bears to eight field goals and 24.2 percent shooting in the second half.

The next day, Chicago held UW-Stevens Point to 25.5 percent shooting from the field as the Maroons defeated the Pointers 63-40. Elizabeth Nye and Britta Nordstrom combined for 38 points on 16-for-20 from the floor for Chicago, while Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) led UWSP with eight points and 12 rebounds. Eleven players scored in the game for the Pointers, although none reached double figures, while the Maroons shot 51.0 percent in the win.

GETTING IN ON THE ACT
Through three games this season, 14 players have scored for UW-Stevens Point. Fourteen players scored in the season opener, seven scored in the win over WashU and 11 scored in the loss to Chicago. Hennes is the only UWSP player averaging in double figures in scoring (14.0 ppg) but five players are averaging between 6.3 and 8.7 points a game.

Thirteen players scored for UW-Stevens Point in the entirety of last season. In 2014-15, the Pointers had a similar balanced scoring attack, as Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) led UWSP in scoring (10.0 ppg) and five other players averaged over 4.3 points per game.

SHARING THE BALL, PROTECTING THE BALL
In its two wins this season, UW-Stevens Point has totaled 39 assists and 29 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.34. In the Pointers' loss to the Maroons, UWSP had 22 turnovers and just six assists. Through three games, UWSP has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.88, compared to last season's mark of 0.52.

UW-Stevens Point's 22 assists against Finlandia were the team's most since a 79-60 win over UW-Platteville on Jan. 30, 2013, a span of 63 games. The Pointers' 17 assists against WashU were more than UWSP had in any game last season.

ENJOYING NOVEMBER
UW-Stevens Point is 40-9 in the month of November since the start of the 2006-07 season, including a 22-4 record on its home court in the month. The Pointers have lost two home games in the month of November just once in the last nine seasons and need to win one of two games this week to extend that streak to 10.

ABOUT LAKELAND | HOME | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS
Lakeland has lost its first three games of the season, all of which were play on the Muskies' home court. Lakeland is coming off a 60-47 loss at home to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday evening. The Warhawks used a 13-1 run late in the third quarter to turn an eight-point lead into a comfortable 20-point advantage and led by at least a dozen throughout the fourth quarter. Kayla Clark led the Muskies with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Bailey Grayvold added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Muskies opened their season by hosting the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 13-14. At the tournament, Lakeland fell 62-54 to Carthage in its season opener and 77-58 to Simpson. Lakeland led Carthage 17-7 late in the first quarter but mustered just 15 points in the second and third quarters. The next day, Simpson used runs of 15-0 and 19-2 in the first half to take a 43-28 lead.
Through three games this season, Clark leads Lakeland in scoring at 13.3 points per game and is joined in double figures by Grayvold's 10.7 per-game average. Callie Olson adds 9.3 points per game in 18.7 minutes a game off the bench.

Last season, Lakeland went 10-16 overall and 9-11 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Muskies made the eight-team NCAA Tournament as the seventh seed but fell 78-66 to second-seeded Benedictine in the quarterfinals despite 26 points from Grayvold.

Grayvold was the Muskies' leading scorer last season at 15.3 points per game, while five other players averaged between 6.3 and 8.9 points a game. Grayvold was a First Team All-NACC selection as a sophomore in 2014-15, becoming the first Lakeland player to receive first team honors since 2012-13.

ABOUT ST. THOMAS | HOME | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS
St. Thomas has opened its 2015-16 campaign by winning each of its first four games.  By the time they face the Pointers, the Tommies will have had a full week off since back-to-back victories at the Doug McArthur Classic at Puget Sound on Nov. 20-21.

At the tournament, St. Thomas defeated Pacific Lutheran 76-62 and Puget Sound 82-61. The trio of Gabby Zehrer, Katie Stone and Kaitlin Langer combined for 55 points in the win over PLU and 63 in the victory against Puget Sound.

The Tommies opened their season with a narrow 62-60 win over St. Norbert on Nov. 14 before posting a 94-79 win at Buena Vista two days later. St. Thomas has won its last three games all by double digits and by an average of 16.7 points a game.

Langer, Stone and Zehrer have combined to score 210 of St. Thomas' 314 points (66.9 percent) this season. Langer leads the way with averages of 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds on 63.6 percent shooting. Stone averages 17.8 points a game and is shooting 15-for-36 (41.7 percent) from behind the arc, while Zehrer is shooting 65.5 percent and averaging 15.3 points a game. No other UST player averages more than 5.8 points per game.

The Tommies began the season ranked No. 18 by D3hoops.com after finishing last season ranked No. 4, following a 75-58 loss at No. 1 and eventual national champion Thomas More in the sectional finals of the NCAA Tournament last season. St. Thomas was a perfect 30-0 entering that game, including an 18-0 run through the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

St. Thomas graduated eight seniors, including All-America selections Jenna Dockter and Maggie Weiers, from a group that went 110-14 over their four-year careers. Dockter was one of three finalists for the D-III National Player of the Year last season, while Weiers was a two-time honorable mention All-America pick before earning All-America honors as a senior in 2014-15.

THE COACHES
Shirley Egner is in her 27th season as the head coach at UW-Stevens Point and is the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) history with a 489-212 (.697) career record. Over the last 14 seasons, Egner has guided the Pointers to a 319-87 record, the best mark of any WIAC team over that span. She is a four-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, a three-time Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Women's Coach of the Year (2010-12) was inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2001-02, Egner led the Pointers to the national title and a 30-3 record to become just the eight team in Division III history to win 30 games in a season.

This season is Aaron Nester's first season as the head coach at Lakeland and his 14th year coaching at the Division III level. Last year, Nester was the top assistant at Central College in Pella, Iowa, after serving the previous seasons as the head coach at Oglethorpe University. Nester was also an assistant coach at Wartburg from 2006-11 and the Knights improved from 7-18 to 21-5 from his first to final season.

Ruth Sinn is in the midst of her 11th season at St. Thomas and boasts a career record of 219-71, including a mark of 170-37 in the last seven seasons. She has led the Tommies to either the MIAC regular-season or playoff title or both in each of the last six seasons and 10 regular season or playoff titles in the last nine seasons. Under Sinn's direction, St. Thomas posted a third-place NCAA finish in 2011-12 and her teams have won at least 20 games for six consecutive seasons.

SERIES NOTES
Tuesday night's game is just the sixth-ever meeting between UW-Stevens Point and Lakeland. The Pointers lead the all-time series 3-2. Last season, UW-Stevens Point recorded a 67-52 win at Lakeland on Nov. 25 behind 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble).

St. Thomas and UW-Stevens Point will meet for the 10th time on Sunday in a series the Tommies lead 7-2. The Pointers cut a 15-point deficit to just one with 3:05 remaining but was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Tommies won last season's meeting 60-52 on Nov. 30 at Berg Gym. UST and UWSP have met every season since 2010-11 and four of the last five meetings have been decided by eight points or less.
