Women's hoops cruises to win over Falcons on Senior Day

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team held visiting UW-River Falls to 22.2 percent shooting and cruised to a 71-39 win on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Berg Gym.

UW-Stevens Point (16-7, 9-5 WIAC) shot 57.1 percent in the opening half and limited UW-River Falls (6-17, 4-10 WIAC) to four field goals and 15.4 percent from the floor in building a 38-13 lead at the half. The Pointers never trailed in the game and led by as many as 32 in the second half.
 
After an early 5-5 tie, UWSP took control by holding UWRF without a made field goal for nearly 11 minutes. During the stretch, the Pointers went on a 22-4 run to lead 27-9.
 
By halftime, UW-Stevens Point had established a 25-point lead behind a 26-4 advantage in points in the paint and a 20-4 edge in bench points. Ten players scored for the Pointers in the first half.
 
In the second half, UWSP continued its efficient offensive afternoon, shooting an even 50.0 percent to finish at 54.0 percent for the game. The Pointers defense forced 22 turnovers in the contest, which led to 17 points.
 
Senior Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) led all scorers in the game with 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and made all four of her free throws. Fellow senior Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) was also in double figures, making 5-of-6 shots for 12 points.
 
Allie Micelli led the strong effort off the bench for UWSP, adding 10 points. Joann Wolfenberg (Adell, WI/Plymouth Comprehensive) chipped in with nine, while Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) added seven points and a team-high five rebounds.
 
Hannah Pignato led UW-River Falls with 11 points off the bench. Kate Theisen hit two three-pointers and finished with eight.
 
UWSP controlled the backboards by a 40-31 margin and handed out 11 assists, compared to just four for UWRF. The Pointers also shot 75.0 percent (15-for-20) from the free-throw line.
 
The game marked the final home game for seniors Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion), Claire Glodowski (Amherst, WI/Amherst), Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst) and Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton). In their four years, the Pointers compiled a 91-21 overall record and a 50-12 mark in the WIAC.
 
UW-Stevens Point hosts No. 17 UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for the annual Play4Kay game. Tip-off between the Pointers and Titans is at 7 p.m. at Berg Gym.
