Men's basketball tops Falcons, claims at least a share of WIAC title

Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The top-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team overcame its lowest-scoring game of the season by grinding out a 54-50 win over UW-River Falls on Saturday night at the Karges Center.

Box Score

The Pointers (21-1, 12-1 WIAC) trailed the Falcons (7-16, 2-12 WIAC) 50-48 with 4:15 remaining but held UWRF scoreless for the remainder of the game and scored the final six points of the contest. UWSP scored a season-low 54 points and shot a season-low 38.8 percent from the floor.

Trailing 50-48, Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln/UW-Green Bay) tied the score with a pair of free throws before giving the Pointers the lead on a layup with 46 seconds remaining. The Falcons then missed the potential game-winning three-pointer and Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) drained two free throws after being fouled, putting the game out of reach with three seconds to play.

With the win, UW-Stevens Point claimed at least a share of the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball championship. The conference title is the 10th in the last 15 years for the Pointers and the league-leading 28th in program history. UWSP can claim the title outright with one win in its remaining two games or one loss by UW-Whitewater in its final contest.

Heuer led all scorers with 15 points and also grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double at UWSP. Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) added 13 points, while Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) hit 4-of-9 threes to score 12 points and recorded eight boards.

Following a jumper by Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne), UW-Stevens Point led 48-40 with 7:44 left in regulation. However, the Falcons went on a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead into the closing stages. Devin Buckley scored five of his 13 points during the spurt. Ollie White also scored 13 for UWRF in the game and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Pointers built a 34-25 lead at halftime behind 11 points and 10 rebounds from Heuer in the opening 20 minutes. The Falcons chipped away at the lead after the break, taking the lead at 36-35 after scoring 11 of the first 12 points of the second half.

UW-Stevens Point's first made field goal of the second half did not come until Jordan Lutz (Amherst, WI/Amherst) made a three to break a 36-36 tie at the 12:37 mark. UWRF outscored UWSP 14-2 in the paint after the break.

In the first half, UW-Stevens Point got off to a quick start, taking a 17-5 lead in the opening seven minutes of play. Hass made a pair of three-pointers to start the game before Heuer scored seven consecutive UWSP points. The Pointers held a 16-6 advantage in points in the first half.

After shooting 45.2 percent in the first half, UW-Stevens Point made just five field goals and shot 27.8 percent in the second. UWSP used a 7-0 advantage in scoring at the free-throw line to help overcome a 14-6 UWRF advantage in bench points in the second half.

UW-Stevens Point will look to claim the WIAC championship outright at UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, February 19 at 7 p.m. The Pointers topped the Titans 58-30 at home on Jan. 15.
