Barber, Gerber, Sullivan named Subway Athletes of the Year

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point Athletics Department has announced the Subway Athletes of the Year. Senior Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) earned team sport Female Athlete of the Year, senior Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) earned team sport Male Athlete of the Year, and junior Dan Sullivan (Elkhorn, WI/Elkhorn) was named individual sport Male Athlete of the Year.

Barber and Sullivan are repeat winners of the award after taking home the honor at the end of the 2011-12 season.

In early April, Barber was named the 2013 State Farm®/WBCA NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Barber earned several more accolades after leading the Pointers to a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship and into the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Barber was also a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) First Team All-American and was named the WIAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Gerber, helped lead the baseball team to its fifth NCAA Division III World Series appearance. Gerber was an American Baseball Coaches Association All-American Third Team selection and First Team All-WIAC honoree.

Gerber led the WIAC in home runs (12), RBIs (61) and total bases (136). Nationally, those marks rank third, fourth and second, respectively.

Sullivan earned his third career national title when he repeated as the 1,500-meter run champion at the NCAA Division III 2013 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He posted a time of 3:46.19.

Sullivan set a national meet record at the NCAA Division III 2013 Indoor National Championships by finishing the one-mile run in 4:16.39.
