STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Seniors
Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) and
Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) earned 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American honors shortly after leading the UW-Stevens Point baseball team to the program's fifth NCAA Division III World Series appearance.
Schilter, who was named an All-American Honorable Mention by D3baseball.com, is a First-Team ABCA All-American. Schilter ranks sixth in the nation with 84 hits and third with 68 runs.
The UWSP catcher topped the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in stolen bases for the second consecutive season, recording 22 swipes this year. Schilter finished second on the team with nine home runs, 15 doubles and 132 total bases.
“While Ryan was with us for only two years, he certainly left a lasting impression on our program,” said UWSP Head Coach
Pat Bloom. “He is one of the best catchers to have played here at UWSP, and his defensive performance in the World Series was as impressive as I have seen from any position player.”
Schilter was a perfect 8-for-8 in throwing out base runners during the World Series.
“To be a First Team All-American is an outstanding achievement – it means that you are the best of the best across all of Division III baseball,” Bloom continued. “Ryan has pro-caliber abilities as a catcher – I am excited for the opportunities that are in store for him beyond his tenure here at UW-Stevens Point.”
Gerber, a Third Team ABCA All-American, didn't lead just the Pointers in numerous offensive statistics, but was tops in several WIAC categories as well. Gerber led the WIAC in RBIs (61), home runs (12) and total bases (136).
Nationally, Gerber ranks third in home runs, second in total bases, fourth in RBIs, and sixth in runs scored.
“Sean had a great season and is certainly deserving of this honor,” said Bloom. “His presence in the middle of our lineup has had a tremendous impact on our offensive success over the past three years. Sean is the type of hitter who could change the game with one swing of the bat, and there were times this season where he carried us offensively.”
Notably, Gerber hit four home runs in a doubleheader - two in each game - when UWSP swept St. Scholastica in Stevens Point on April 20.
“On top of it all, he was a gold-glove caliber first baseman who had some of the best hands that I have seen at that position,” said Bloom. “I am proud of Sean for what he represents as a baseball player and as a young man – he has been a great role model for our younger players.”
