Men's hockey announces 2013-14 team captains

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior defenseman Tyler Krueger (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) has been named captain for the 2013-14 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team, while juniors Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) and Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) and sophomore Evan Dixon (Novi, MI/) have been tabbed assistant captains, head coach Chris Brooks announced this week. Captains were selected through a team vote.

“This a great honor for these guys to be recognized by their teammates as captains of our team for the 2013-14 season,” said Brooks. “Many other players garnered recognition from their teammates, but these four guys stood apart as the players that were viewed as the leaders.”

Krueger, a Stevens Point native who played his junior hockey with the Alaska Avalanche (NAHL), skated in 21 games in 2012-13, finishing the season +19, best on the team. The defenseman tallied five assists and one goal.

“Tyler has grown so much over the past two years as a player, but more importantly as a person,” said Brooks. “It is a great honor for him to be clearly recognized as the player our team views as captain. His high expectation for our program on the ice, in the classroom and in the community is very clear.”

Jaeger logged over 1,100 minutes in goal for the Pointers last season, appearing in 20 contests. He held the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association's (NCHA) third-best goals against average (2.69) and had a .605 winning percentage. Jaeger was a 2012 First Team All-WIAC honoree and in 2013 earned Honorable Mention All-WIAC accolades.

Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) has been a leader on our team since he stepped on campus,” said Brooks. The way he prepares and conducts himself in everything he does, epitomizes what our program is about.”

Henegar, an Honorable Mention All-WIAC honoree in 2013, appeared in all 27 games for the Pointers, tallying 10 goals and six assists. He tallied three game-winning goals for the Pointers and four power play scores.

“Scott continues to be look upon as a leader on our team. His work ethic and determination make everyone around him better.”

Dixon appeared in 25 games in 2012-13 for the Pointers. He tallied six goals and two assists on the season.

“For Evan Dixon (Novi, MI/) to be recognized by his teammates as an assistant captain after one season at UWSP speaks volumes to his character,” said Brooks. “He is a player that holds himself to a high standard in everything he does.”

The Pointers finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 15-11-1 overall record, qualifying for the NCHA playoffs. The Pointers open the 2013-14 season, their first playing solely under the auspices of the WIAC, Nov. 1, hosting Finlandia University at K.B. Willett Arena at 7 p.m. The full 2013-14 schedule will be released at a later date.
