Pointers football closes season with victory at UW-Stout

Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point defense forced six turnovers as the Pointers closed out the season with a 19-14 conference victory over UW-Stout on Saturday afternoon at Williams Stadium.

UWSP's defense picked off UW-Stout quarterback Hank Kujak four times, including two by cornerback Bennet Wenzel (Menasha, WI/Menasha). Jake Bedor (Shiocton, WI/Shiocton) and Jay Kuenster (Sauk Prairie, WI/Sauk Prairie) each recovered a fumble in the win. Cody Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) and Zach Vallafskey (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) both recorded double-digit tackles in the game, as the Pointers held the Blue Devils to 283 yards of offense.

The lone Pointers touchdown of the game came five minutes into the game when Cody Nuernberg (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) hooked up with Luke Neubauer (Shawano, WI/Shawano) for a 44-yard touchdown on a halfback pass. The scoring strike was the lone play of the drive and came after Kuenster recovered a fumble after a blocked punt.

The rest of the UWSP scoring was provided by kicker Jesse Vervelde (Oostburg, WI/Oostburg)'s four field goals. After Stout tied the game on a 1-yard David Goebel run in the second quarter, Vervelde hit four field goals to give UW-Stevens Point a 19-7 advantage.

The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 19-14 after an Adolfo Pacheco 22-yard touchdown run at the 5:02 mark of the final quarter. After the score, the Pointers ate up 5:01 with an 11-play drive and turned it over on downs with one second left. Mitch Chester (Green Bay, WI/Southwest) sacked Kujak on the final play for one of three UWSP sacks in the game.

UW-Stevens Point had 428 yards of offense in the game. Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) threw for 256 yards and ran for another 31 on the ground. Neubauer was his favorite target, finishing with six catches for 129 yards and a score. DeJuan Wright (St. Petersburg, FL/Keswick Christian) led the Pointers with 85 yards on 24 rushes.

The win wraps up the Pointers season with a 5-5 record, including a 3-4 mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
