STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point held a 2-1 lead midway through the first period, but visiting Adrian College scored six of the next seven goals to hand the Pointers a 7-3 loss on Saturday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.
Adrian got on the board just four minutes in on a Sarah Connelly goal but back-to-back goals by
Morgan Pearson (Wausau, WI/West) gave the Pointers a 2-1 advantage at the 11:25 mark of the game's opening period.
Adrian responded with the equalizer with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening period as the teams skated to the first intermission deadlocked at 2-2.
In the second, a pair of Adrian power-play goals to start the second gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 edge at the 11:58 mark.
Nicole Schaub (Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) responded with a power-play goal for the Pointers with just under a minute remaining in the second period to cut the deficit to just one goal, 4-3, after two.
In the third, it was all Adrian as the Bulldogs tallied a power-play goal at the 6:12 mark and then tacked on two empty-netters during the final minutes to take game one of the weekend series 7-3.
Johanna Sommers (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) tallied eight saves in goal for the Pointers while
Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) tallied two. Adrian's Brittany Zeches stopped 23 Pointer shots on target.
UW-Stevens Point (9-9-2, 8-6-1 NCHA) and Adrian (9-8-2, 7-6-2 NCHA) return to the ice on Sunday, Feb. 5 for the final game of the weekend series. Face-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Ice Hawks Arena.
