STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The nation's second-ranked UW-La Crosse wrestling team used early victories to build a big lead and take a 27-9 decision over the 26th-ranked Pointers of UW-Stevens Point on Friday evening.
The Pointers first victory of the night came at 157 pounds where
Ben Strobel (Neenah, WI/Neenah) wrestled his way to a hard-fought 3-1 victory over La Crosse's JR Lewis.
After narrow defeats at 165 and 174,
Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) picked up the only other victory of the evening for the Pointers, pinning eighth-ranked Zach Strickland of UW-La Crosse in 4:24 for his 17th victory of the season.
The victory improves UW-L's record to 18-2 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point drops to 6-14 overall, 1-3 in conference action.
UW-Stevens Point next takes to the mat on Friday, Feb. 17 as the team travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for nonconference match-up against fourth-ranked Augsburg College. The Pointers then close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 18 at UW-Eau Claire.
