SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team finished 1-2 at the 2012 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday.

The 28th-ranked Pointers opened the day by taking third-ranked Ithaca College (NY) to the limit before falling 19-18. Ithaca opened the match with three straight victories before Shane Sweeney (Madison, WI/Edgewood) picked up a 5-1 victory. Ben Strobel (Neenah, WI/Neenah) followed that with a pin at 157 pounds but Ithaca victories at 165 and 174 proved too much to overcome as Andy Borchardt (Edgar, WI/Edgar), Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) and Matt Cuadra (Oshkosh, WI/West) victories were unable to secure enough points for the Pointers.

In the consolation bracket the Pointers posted their lone victory of the day, a 24-10 defeat of 22nd-ranked Johnson & Wales. Lance Fabry (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) and Joe Mileski (Gladstone, MI/Gladstone) gave the Pointers the early lead and Sweeney, Strobel, Ryan Conat (New London, WI/New London), Wozniak and Cuadra all tallied victories as the Pointers stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament.

In the final match of the day for the Pointers, 24th-ranked Mount Union picked up the victory by a 22-15 mark. The Purple Raiders picked up four victories to build an early lead which UWSP was unable to overcome. Strobel, Bill Langford (Westosha, WI/Westosha Central) and Wozniak tallied victories in the setback.

UW-Stevens Point (3-6) returns to action on Jan. 13-14 at the Bud Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
