Men's Hockey Team to "Put a Check to Cancer”

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's hockey team is joining forces with Ministry Health Care for the third straight year to “Put a Check to Cancer.”

The Pointers will wear special-edition Cancer Awareness game jerseys on Saturday, January 28 as they take on UW-River Falls in a 7 p.m. game at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

During the game, a silent auction will be held for the specialty jerseys which are black with pink and white trim and feature the Pointer Hockey logo and cancer awareness signature pink ribbon.

All proceeds will benefit cancer patients served by Ministry Saint Michael's Hospital and related programs supported through Saint Michael's Foundation.

“We are once again grateful to the men's hockey team and UWSP Athletic Department for their support of local cancer patients and our programs,” said Angie Heuck, director, Saint Michael's Foundation. “We also hope the event will provide additional energy and excitement at Willett Arena in this important late-season match-up against UW-River Falls.”

Fans are encouraged to “black-out” Willett Arena in support of the Pointers in their match-up against the Falcons by wearing black.

Pink roses will also be sold at the door for $1 and fans are encouraged to toss their roses onto the ice following the first Pointer goal. Both teams will collect the roses and will donate them to local organizations.

“Cancer touches the hearts of many people and this is a great opportunity for us to help local cancer patients and partner with our community to make a difference,” said UW-Stevens Point head Coach Chris Brooks.

In its first two years, Put a Check to Cancer has raised nearly $8,000 to support local cancer patients.
