ALBION, Mich. -The Pointer offense found the end zone twice and the defense held Albion to just three points to spoil the Britons' homecoming with a 14-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
The Britons shifted the momentum to their side right away as they intercepted Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) just three plays into their opening drive.
Point's defense stepped up after the change of possession allowing just 26 yards on nine plays and held Albion to a field goal.
In the second quarter, the Pointers capitalized on great field position and only had to travel 38 yards to the end zone for the first time this season.
On the drive Barnes hooked up with Marc Young (Detroit, MI/Soutfield-Lathrup) for plays of 18 and 14 yards to set up Cory Flisakowski (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) for a one-yard score and a 7-3 Pointer advantage going into halftime.
After another defensive stand the Pointers started their second scoring drive midway through the third quarter.
Young was a key contributor on the drive as he caught two passes for 24 yards and also added in a 15-yard rush.
Facing third-and-goal at the two, Barnes connected with Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) on a screen pass to increase the lead to 14-3 in favor of UW-Stevens Point.
Albion had opportunities in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap but Mason Czekala (Manitowoc, WI/Lincoln) and Jared Bedor (Shiocton, WI/Shiocton) sacked Spencer Krauss on a fourth down play at the Pointers 23 yard line to end the drive.
Colton Zimmerman (Iola, WI/Iola-Scandinavia) intercepted Krauss with 2:36 remaining to seal the 14-3 victory for the Pointers.
Both defenses played well with each team only allowing 11 first downs on the day. UW-Stevens Point allowed the Britons 228 yards while Albion held the Pointers to 226.
Curtis Krump (Hankinson, ND/Hankinson) led the defense with eight tackles and one sack while Kody Morgan (Iola, WI/Iola-Scandinavia) tallied six tackles and two passes defensed.
Barnes had his best passing game of the season completing 11 of 14 passes for 129 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Young led the team with six catches for 81 yards and Flisakowski carried the ball 24 times for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Krauss finished the day 19 for 37 for 117 yards and one interception. J.C. Cruse had seven catches for 62 yards and Brian Spencer led the team with 64 yards on five receptions.
Point was able to hold Clinton Orr to 76 all-purpose yards. He was averaging 165.5 yards per contest entering the game.
UW-Stevens Point (2-1) will return to action Saturday, October 1 when it opens the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) portion of its schedule traveling to La Crosse to face the Eagles. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
