The Pointers, predicted to finish second in the perennial power Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), will face Williamette in the opener. Head coach John Miech likes what he has seen so far.
“Our student-athletes are so far ahead of the game at this point,” said Miech. “We have been really productive and haven't missed a beat from the spring and it really shows how prepared we are at this time.”
Miech said the one rarity in the first ten days is a perfect practice, something his team has accomplished six times already, much to his surprise. By the coaching staff's definition, a perfect practice is one with great effort and execution, along with exceptional conditioning.
“I think that is very telling of this season,” said Miech. “And our receivers and QBs have made great strides in the first 10 days. We are very excited about where our team is at right now.”
With his returners coming in with great preparation, Miech said it has been helpful in getting the entire squad on the same page. “It has allowed us to spend more time with our freshmen,” said Miech.
While the first 10 days of practice prior to the opener have been productive, the next 10 will need to be equally as such.
“We have about seven positions right now where we have multiple players competing for the starting spot,” said Miech. “The cream will have to rise to the top to claim those spots in the next 10 days.”
UWSP travels to Salem, Ore. to take on Williamette for the season opener September 3. The Pointer's home opener is slated for September 10 against UW-Platteville for a non-conference game. The home opener marks the 25th annual Spud Bowl and second annual Team Schierl/Eastbay Pink Game.
