STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the regular season conference championship with a 67-59 victory over UW-Eau Claire (13-9, 7-6 WIAC) in the team's annual Pink Zone game Wednesday night at Berg Gymnasium.
The Pointers trailed at the half 27-26 but used a second half surge to put away the Blugolds. The Pointers saw four players score in double figures including 11 big points off the bench for Josi Schultz (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial). Schultz was aggressive all night against the zone defense of UW-Eau Claire and was key to the Pointer's success in the second half.
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) scored two of her team leading 13 points at the 11:07 mark of the second half to give the Pointers the lead they would hold for the rest of the game. Barber hit three three-point baskets as the Pointers totaled nine as a team.
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) and Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) each finished the game with 12 points apiece. Bandow also finished with four assists and six rebounds.
Hannah Mesick led UW-Eau Claire in a double-double effort with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Nicole Christianson added 11 points.
UW-Stevens Point (20-2, 13-0 WIAC) looks to clinch the WIAC outright on Saturday afternoon as they take on the Falcons of UW-River Falls, the game is set to tip-off at 5 pm. Saturday is also Senior Day for the Pointer women.
