Winners Give Back - Pointer Athletics earns national award for community service

The season's not over yet, but Saturday's  UW-Stevens Point home basketball games will celebrate another national championship, of sorts, for Pointer Athletics.

UW-Stevens Point has been named the national trophy winner for overall community service by student-athletes for all of NCAA Division III. That's the nation's largest college athletics organization. The Jostens Trophy for the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators will be presented at halftime of Saturday's Pointer men's basketball game against UW-River Falls. Game time is 3 p.m.  At both the men's and the following Pointer women's games, fans will receive free posters and cheer-cards celebrating the national honor.

"This award is a fitting tribute to a program that has earned a national reputation not only for athletics excellence, but for the many ways our Pointer athletes give back to our community," said Chancellor Bernie Patterson.

Last year alone, Pointer athletes from all teams logged more than 1,000 hours of community service, building houses, reading to school kids, filling sandbags during flooding, and on and on.

Patterson said much of the credit for Pointer Athletics' tradition of service goes to recently retired Athletics Director Frank O'Brien.

The ethic of commitment to community remains strong among all Pointer students, as well. Last year, across the entire campus, more than 1,900 students volunteered locally and on service trips, giving close to 7,000 additional hours of time which, measured in dollars, was worth more than $143,000, according to the university.
