STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team took down seventh-ranked Adrian College 6-2 Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.
Adrian came out strong, scoring in the first minute of the game and again midway through the first period to take an early 2-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
The next two periods were all UWSP.
Nick Kenney (Wixom, MI/Walled Lake Western) put the first goal on the board for the Pointers, scoring eight minutes into the second period off assists from
Jerry Freismuth (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and
Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt).
Less than a minute later,
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) found the back of the net with assists coming from Freismuth and Kenney to tie the game at two.
With four minutes left in the second period, UWSP would take the lead on a
Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) goal.
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and
Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) were credited with assists as the Pointers took a 3-2 lead going into the final period.
Henegar struck again in the third period, scoring a shorthanded goal thanks to assists from
Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) and
Jon Bockmann (Wind Lake, WI/Muskego).
Twelve minutes later, Politz scored a goal of his own with assists from
Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) and Gibson for a commanding 5-2 lead.
Bockmann capped the scoring for the Pointers, nailing an empty-net goal from his own blue line with a minute remaining in the game, giving UWSP a 6-2 victory.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) stopped 21 of 23 shots on goal in the win while Adrian's James Hamby saved 40 of 45 shots on goal.
UWSP (6-7-2) will play their first game of 2012 on the road when they travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's on January 6. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
