STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point soccer team opened up the 2010 season with a 3-0 shutout victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday afternoon at the Point Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers got rolling right away, scoring 49 seconds into the game when sophomore Kirsti Nickels (Appleton/East) scored off a free kick from senior Mary Jean Cornelius.

Sophomore Angela Gallow (Menasha, WI/Menasha) added her first of two goals on the day at the 17:25 mark when she found the back of the net off a Lauryn Semling (Plover, WI/SPASH) shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, giving the Pointers a 2-0 edge.

In the second half, Gallow struck again, this time off an assist from junior Hillary Sauer (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH), putting the Pointers in front 3-0.

Senior goalkeeper Liz Hunter (Stevens Point/SPASH) made several key saves down the stretch to preserve the shutout for the Pointer, finishing the day with four saves.

The Pointers (1-0) return to action on Saturday, September 4, when they head to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Rhodes College. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
