HANCOCK, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team took advantage of two second period power play goals to defeat the Finlandia Lions 3-1 at Houghton County Arena Sunday afternoon in their final regular season game.
After a scoreless first period from both sides it was the Pointers who struck first in the second period. With 14:21 left in the second, Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN) capitalized on a power play opportunity to score her seventh goal of the season. Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL) helped with the assist on the play.
With just 29 seconds remaining Edward's was able to sneak another power play goal past Lions' goalie Casey Fiore. The goal was Edward's 11th of the season and assists were credited to Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C.) and Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN).
The Pointers Ariel Novak (Lindstrom, MN) put the Pointers up 3-0 with an unassisted goal with 14:05 left in the final period.
The Eagles managed to break up d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI) shut out bid with a goal from Katie Matanich, assisted from Katelyn McLean and Katie Harris. On the afternoon Phillips stopped 16 shots while allowing one goal.
The Pointers finished the regular season with an overall record of 13-9-3 and 8-7-3 in NCHA play.
UW-Stevens Point will now travel to UW-Superior on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th in the NCHA quarterfinals. Starting time for the two games are still unknown.
