Engelland captures 184 pound WIAC Championship

STEVENS POINT - After runner-up finishes at 184 pounds his freshman and sophomore seasons, Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah) broke through and won WIAC Championship at his weight class on Sunday afternoon, leading the Pointers to a third place finish in the event.

UW-La Crosse captured it's 13th straight WIAC title, posting a team score of 154 points.  The Eagles had a wrestler in each of the 10 finals matches, and finished with seven first place finishers at the event. UW-Whitewater finished second, just one point ahead of UW-Stevens Point with 118.0.

STEVENS POINT, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured its 13th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship at UW-Stevens Point's Quandt Fieldhouse on Feb. 21.

The Eagles secured the crown with 154 team points to surpass UW-Whitewater's second-place sum of 118 points. UW-Stevens Point finished third with 117 points, UW-Platteville fourth with 105.50 points, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 90.5 points and UW-Eau Claire sixth with 63 points.

UW-La Crosse claimed seven individual titles en route to the league-best 14th first-place team trophy in program archives. Dan Laurent became the fourth person in WIAC history to earn four straight 285-pound crowns with a 5-2 decision over UW-Whitewater's Jon Schmidt. Laurent joins UW-Whitewater's Tim Carmin (1979-1982), UW-Stevens Point's Perry Miller (1995-98) and UW-La Crosse's Ryan Allen (2003-06) as four-time winners.

The Eagles' Matt Mauseth became the first individual to claim three consecutive titles at 149 pounds with a 3-2 decision over UW-Stevens Point's Kris Magruder (Racine/Case), while Albie McKinney secured his second straight first-place medal at 125 pounds with a pin of UW-Stevens Point's Joe Mileski (Gladstone, MI/Gladstone) at 2:44.

Mike Schmitz also won his second consecutive title, capturing the 174-pound division with an 8-0 major decision over UW-Oshkosh's Sam Engelland.

Bebeto Yewah won the 133-pound crown with a 15-6 major decision over UW-Whitewater's Kyle Wachholder. Cory Ferguson was victorious at 165 pounds with a 22-9 major decision over UW-Stevens Point's Jordan Schulte (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee), while Andy Moore captured the 197-pound crown with a 9-3 decision over UW-Whitewater's Adam Latella.

At 141 pounds, UW-Whitewater's Austin Bautista also made WIAC history, becoming the first competitor to claim three consecutive titles. He earned this year's first-place medal with a 4-2 decision over UW-La Crosse's Alex Dahl.

UW-Platteville's Jesse Milks captured the 157-pound championship with a 7-0 decision over UW-La Crosse' Ryan Farwell. Milks joins UW-La Crosse's Ross Needham (2004-07) as the only individuals to win three straight crowns in the weight class.

UW-Stevens Point's Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah) won the 184-pound title with a 5-0 decision over UW-La Crosse's Mitch Artist.

The 10 WIAC champions, along with nine at-large selections that were voted on by the conference coaches, will participate in the NCAA Division III Championship on March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Joe Pitsch, UW-La Crosse's Ryan Farwell, UW-Oshkosh's Carl DeLuca, UW-Platteville's Andy Casper, UW-Stevens Point's Nick Estep (Racine/Case) and UW-Whitewater's Matt Schuck.
