Egner Elected to WBCA Hall of Fame

STEVENS POINT - After collecting her 500th career win as a head coach during the 2009-10 season season and approaching 400 career wins at UW-Stevens Point, head women's basketball coach Shirley Egner added another honor.

Coach Egner is one of four college coaches being inducted into the 2010 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Hall of Fame.

In her 21st season as the head coach of the Pointer women's basketball team, Coach Egner ranks second all-time in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in wins. Under her direction the Pointers have won at least 18 games each of the past 10 seasons.

A three-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, Coach Egner reached the pinnacle of the basketball world in the 2001-02 season, leading the Pointers to a National Championship, as the team posted a 67-65 win over St. Lawrence. She then took the Pointers back to the final four two years later, placing fourth. Since, the Pointers have averaged 21 wins a season and last year advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to top-ranked and undefeated Illinois Wesleyan.

Egner will be inducted with fellow college coaches Al McGuire (Marquette), Walter Meanwell (UW-Madison) and Rich Panella (Cardinal Stritch). A full list of the 2010 inductees is below.
