STEVENS POINT – With just 9:53 remaining in the third period, a defensive miscue by the Pointers led to a two-on-one breakaway and the game-winning goal by Adrian's Olivia Rork, as the Bulldogs tallied a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon over the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team at IceHawks Arena.
The loss drops the Pointers to 12-9-2 overall, 7-5-2 in the NCHA and into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with one weekend of the regular season remaining. Adrian improves to 13-10-2, 11-4-1 in the NCHA, moving one point ahead of Lake Forest for the league's top spot.
Adrian struck first in the second period, scoring on the power play at the 15:26 mark, as Lauren Anastos scored off a Shana Davis pass, giving the visitors the advantage.
Stevens Point answered, knotting the score at a goal apiece, as
Erika Greenen (Naperville, IL/Central) scored off a
Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) pass, Greenen's third of the season, just before the end of the second period.
In the third, Rork's puck found the back of the net, pushing the Bulldogs back in front for good.
Adrian goaltender Dana Tim turned away 11 UWSP shots on net in the final period on her way to 24 saves and a victory.
d'Andra Phillips tallied 15 saves on the day, suffering the loss for UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers close out the regular season next weekend when the team travels to Handcock, Mich. for a match-up against the Lions of Finlandia University. Game time Saturday, Feb. 20 is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. central time.
