Falcons and Pointers Skate to 1-1 Tie

Box Score

STEVENS POINT - Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the third period, but a shorthanded goal late by UW-River Falls forced overtime and the eventual tie as UW-Stevens Point and the Falcons skated to a 1-1 tie in NCHA women's hockey action Saturday afternoon at IceHawks Arena.

With neither team's offense clicking for the first two period, the Pointers capitalized on a power play opportunity that carried over from a River Falls penalty late in the second period that left them a skater down for the start of the third. Amber Ostoff (North Mankato, MN) and Samantha Scheving (Warroad, MN) found Carothers for the Pointer goal.

River Falls answered back, stealing the puck on a Pointer power play opportunity at the 13:46 mark of the third and Katie Flanagan scored on the short handed opportunity, knotting the score at 1-1.

In overtime, the Pointers had two good looks at a scoring opportunity but both were turned away by Falcon goalkeeper Melissa Deardorff as the teams skated to the 1-1 tie.

d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI) tallied 17 saves in net for the Pointers while Deardorff recorded 18.

The Pointers (10-6-2, 5-4-2 NCHA) and Falcons (11-3-4, 5-2-3 NCHA) each earn one point for the tie and stay one point apart in the race for third place in the conference standings.

The Pointers hit the road for a weekend series next weekend against UW-Eau Claire. Game time both nights is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.
