STEVENS POINT – In the mid-season meet that is an early indicator of how the two swimming & diving powerhouses of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) will fare in the league's championship race, the Pointers came out on top, as both the men's and women's teams posted victories against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse Saturday afternoon.
The Pointer men's team posed a 132-111 victory over the eagles while the women's team posted a 124-119 victory.
The women posted six event titles on the afternoon, highlighted by the 400 medley relay of
Diandra Nero (Green Bay, WI/),
Jennifer Bussey,
Lisa Clemens (Wisconsin Dells, WI/) and
Andrea Wagner (Apple Valley, MN/) led the way with a time of 4:01.29, almost 10 seconds ahead of the UWSP 'B' team.
Elsewhere for the Pointers, Megan Kittlstad,
Beth Ann Abraham and
Kari Slawson (Rochester, MN/Century) made it a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000 freestyle with Kittlstad posting the best time of 11:01.53.
Nero won the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:11.19,
Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN/) took home the title in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:19.61 and Bussey secured a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.87.
The final women's winner of the day was the 400 freestyle relay team of
Jessica Nordstrom (Hibbing, MN/Hibbing), Andrea Wagner,
Kelly Kading (De Pere, WI/) and
Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN/), who took home the event's top spot in a time of 3:36.60.
The women's team was behind L aCrosse by three going into the last relay, needing to wi the 400 to win the meet. Senior Lindsay Lukes, in her last meet ever at home, hit the water behind UW-La Crosse's anchor on the 400 free relay and ran her down on the last length to win by a touch in what was arguably the most exciting dual meet battle in WIAC history.
"I can still barely speak today [Monday]," said UW-Stevens Point head coach
Al Boelk. "I have never heard our pool be that loud. It was one of those moments that comes by about once every four years."
On the men's side, the 400 medley relay team of
Matthew Olp (Oregon/Oregon),
Brent Schwartz (Waukesha/South),
Ryan Farmer (Naperville, IL/) and
Sam Davy (Stevens Point, WI/) took home the event's top time, finishing in 3:30.08, making it a clean sweep of the event by both the Pointer men and women.
Elsewhere, Sam Davy took home the men's freestyle title in a time of 1:46.09, Matt Olp,
Eric Emerson (River Falls, WI/) and Jake Pelichek finished 1 through 3 in the 50 freestyle as Olp posted a time of 21.77 and in the 200 butterfly,
Zach Desy (Escanaba, MI/) finished with a top time of 2:03.17 taking home the top spot.

Sam Betterley (Castle Rock, MN/Northfield) and
Shaun Marcott (Madison/).
Jake Brand (Stoughton/) ended what would have been a men's and women's sweep of the diving competition by UW-La Crosse, posting an event best 228.75 in the men's one meter dive, finishing first.
The Pointers return to the pool Feb. 5-6, when they travel to the University of Minnesota for the Minnesota Challenge. Action starts Feb. 5 at 6 p.m.
