Late Run Lifts Pointers into WIAC Lead

WHITEWATER – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball improved their winning streak to 11 games on Wednesday evening avenging an early season loss with a 68-51 victory at UW-Whitewater.

The win gives the Pointers a one game lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings heading into the final weeks before the conference tournament.

The Pointers jumped out to a quick 14-3 run to open the game before the Warhawks could get on track. Andrea Flease (New London) lead the first half charge with 14 of her game high 24 points aided by her going 10-13 from the free throw line.

The closest the Warhawks would get in the first half was two points and were faced with a 33-28 deficit at the half.

UW-Whitewater's Courtney Kumerow scored a layup giving the Warhawks the lead with 16:12 left to play. She sparked the second half run with nine of her 15 points coming in the half.

The Pointers would not go away thanks to balanced scoring from Flease, Britta Petersen (Luck), who scored nine of her 13 points in the second half, Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin), and Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) tying the game at 43-43 with 8:23 left to go.

The Pointers never looked back and from that point finishing the game on a 25-8 run to seal the victory.

For the game the Pointers made 18 of their 22 free throws compared to the Warhawks 5-7 effort.

The leading scorer for the Warhawks was Nicole Bundy with 17 points while also corralling eight rebounds.

The Pointers will try to extend their winning streak to 12 games next time out while facing the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Saturday, January 30th. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Berg Gymnasium.
